Frequently Asked Questions
-
Does abortion cause infertility?
Abortion is very safe. Uncomplicated abortions are not associated with loss of fertility.
Abortion complications such as a severe perforation, untreated infection, or Rh sensitization could compromise fertility. It’s important to follow your health care provider’s instructions to reduce your change of complication.
-
Why would someone have an abortion?
People have been having abortions since the dawn of humanity. Pregnancy is a hugely physical and emotional experience. Individual pregnant people know if now is the right time for them to carry a pregnancy and have a(nother) child.
Whether or not someone chooses to have an abortion is no one’s business but theirs.
-
Does it hurt?
Abortions typically involve the feeling of menstrual cramps during and after the abortion was completed. Pain really varies from person to person. For some people it’s mild, and for others it is more intense. If you are having an abortion, talking about your pain management options will help give you a more realistic idea of what to expect.
-
When does life begin?
The timeless question “when does life begin” is often brought into conversations about abortion. In reality, this is a philosophical question, not a medical one.
Regardless of when life begins, no one has the right to use another person’s body without their consent.
-
Does abortion cause mental health problems?
Abortion is not associated with mental health problems. Some predictors of difficulty coping after an abortion are if the decision to terminate a pregnancy was not the pregnant persons, if someone is unsure of their decision, or if they are already struggling with their mental health.
People who are unsure of whether or not they should have an abortion should be able to take the time needed to make their decision. Having an abortion when you aren’t sure causes harm. Having an abortion when you are sure is associated with feelings of relief.
-

In the United States, roughly 1 out of every 4 women (25%) will have an abortion by the age of 45.
